Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi/Arusha – Materuni Village
Start your mini-adventure with the fascinating drive from Moshi to the village of Moshi (30 minutes drive), approximately 1800m above sea level. This territory has the perfect mixture of climate and soil to produce some of the best coffee in Africa. While at the village, you will get to explore the lives of the Chagga people and do coffee tours to see how the locals grow, harvest, roast, grind, and make a cup of coffee. Normally, we ask our clients to try roasting and preparing a fresh cup of coffee the Chagga way.
After a delightful coffee tour, you will head to the Materuni waterfalls, passing through coffee and banana plantations. Along the way, your guide will teach you about local plants and how they are used for food and traditional medicine, and how they make local brew, as well as giving you more insight into the local Chagga culture. You will have your packed lunch and spend the rest of the afternoon at the waterfalls.
The mountain waters fall straight down in a shimmering curtain to splash in the rippling pool where you can float, take a swim, and chill out – literally, as these are pure mountain waters and not yet heated by the sun. Afterwards, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha

Best Time to Visit Materuni Waterfall & Coffee Tour

The beauty of Materuni Village is that it is a year-round destination, but depending on your travel style, here is the seasonal blueprint for 2026/2027:

  • June to October (The Peak Dry Season): This is the absolute best time for easier hiking. The trails are dry, the skies are crystal clear—frequently revealing jaw-dropping views of the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro summit—and the mountain water pool is perfectly crisp for a refreshing swim after the hike.

  • December to March (The Green & Scenic Season): If you love photography, this period offers stunning, vibrant green landscapes. The rainforests are lush, the plantations are thriving, and the waterfall is roaring with maximum volume due to the light rains.

  • April to May (The Low Season): For travelers looking to escape the crowds, the rainy season turns the waterfall into a powerful, dramatic sight. Just ensure you pack sturdy hiking boots, as the tropical trails can get quite muddy and adventurous!
