This itinerary is ideal for adventurous travelers, photographers, and nature lovers who want diversity, exclusivity, and a deeper connection with nature. It combines game drives, boat or lake experiences, forest trekking, and breathtaking scenery, making it one of the most unique safari combinations in Tanzania.
The best time to visit Katavi National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park is during the dry season from June to October, when wildlife viewing and chimpanzee trekking conditions are at their best. During this period, animals gather around limited water sources in Katavi, creating excellent game viewing opportunities with large herds of buffalo, elephants, hippos, and active predators like lions and hyenas.
In Mahale Mountains National Park, the dry season also provides the best conditions for chimpanzee trekking, as the chimpanzees are easier to track in the forest and hiking trails are less slippery and more accessible.
The green season from November to May offers lush rainforest scenery, fewer tourists, and excellent birdwatching. However, heavy rains (especially March–May) can make travel and trekking more challenging.
