6 days
Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where you complete registration and meet your mountain crew. The trail winds through lush rainforest rich with giant trees, mosses, and wildlife such as colobus monkeys and tropical birds.
After approximately 4 to 5 hours of hiking, you arrive at Mandara Hut. If time allows, you can take a short walk to Maundi Crater for beautiful panoramic views.
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail enters open moorland covered with giant lobelias and groundsels. Spectacular views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks begin to dominate the landscape.
After 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you reach Horombo Hut, where you spend the night.
This important extra day is dedicated to acclimatization. You take a guided hike toward Zebra Rocks (about 4,000 m) and then return to Horombo Hut to rest.
This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adapt to the altitude and greatly increases your summit success rate while reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
Today you cross the alpine desert known as “The Saddle,” a broad, barren plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain is stark and dramatic, with incredible views of the summit.
You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon. After an early dinner, rest for a few hours before your midnight summit attempt.
Around midnight, you begin the most demanding stage of the climb. Trek by headlamp to Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak.
After celebrating at the summit and taking photos at the iconic sign, descend to Kibo Hut for a short break and continue to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
After breakfast, descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Here you receive your summit certificate before transferring back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

The best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route is during the dry seasons, when weather conditions are more stable, trails are less slippery, and visibility is excellent. The two most favorable periods are January to March and June to October. These months offer the highest chances of reaching Uhuru Peak while enjoying clear views and more comfortable trekking conditions.
January through March is an excellent time to climb Kilimanjaro for travelers who prefer fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. Conditions are often crisp and clear, and snow near the summit is more common, creating spectacular scenery. This season is ideal for climbers seeking a quieter and more peaceful experience on the mountain.
June to October is the most popular climbing season because it coincides with the long dry period in Tanzania. Days are generally sunny, rainfall is minimal, and panoramic views are often outstanding. These months offer some of the best summit conditions, although routes and huts can be busier due to increased demand.
November is part of the short rainy season, so occasional showers are possible. However, climbs are still feasible and the mountain tends to be less crowded. December usually brings improving weather and is a popular month for holiday travelers and festive-season adventures.
April and May are considered the wettest months of the year and are generally the least favorable for climbing Kilimanjaro. Heavy rainfall can make trails muddy and slippery, and cloud cover may reduce visibility. Although climbs are still possible, most trekkers prefer the drier months for a more comfortable experience.
