Meals: Dinner Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi or Arusha Altitude: ~900m (Moshi) / ~1,400m (Arusha)
After breakfast, meet your lead guideΒ and mountain crew for a comprehensive pre-climb orientation and gear check. This is your opportunity to meet your team, ask questions, confirm your equipment, and align on the route ahead.
In the afternoon, your guide takes you for a relaxed lunch in town. Explore the local market, soak in the vibrant Tanzanian culture at the foot of Africa’s greatest mountain, and enjoy your final night of comfort before the trek begins.
Meals: All meals Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi or Arusha
Drive from your hotel in MoshiΒ or Arusha toΒ Londorossi Gate on the remote western slopes of Kilimanjaro (approximately 3β4 hours). Complete park registration, meet your full porter and cook team, and begin trekking into the ancient Lemosho Glades montane rainforest.
Towering trees draped with moss line the trail. Listen for the dramatic barking of black & white colobus monkeys overhead. Look for elephant and buffalo tracks along the forest floor. Your experienced guides identify rare plant species as you walk. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp nestled deep in the forest for your first mountain dinner.
Meals: Lunch & Dinner Habitat: Montane Rainforest Hiking Time: 3β4 hours Distance: ~7 km / 4.5 miles
Leave the rainforest behind and ascend steeply through heath and moorland vegetationβheather, lichen-draped trees, and the open savannah of tall grasses that signal the Shira Plateau is near.
Climb along the ridge to the caldera’s edge before dropping onto the plateau itself. Dramatic first views of Kibo Peak emerge across the plateau. Arrive at Shira Camp for a hot meal and your first full night at altitude.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Habitat: Heath & Moorland Hiking Time: 7β8 hours Distance: ~5 km / 3.1 miles
β Off the Beaten Path β Very Few Climbers Reach This Camp
Strike out northeast across the rugged expanse of the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth and a landscape of volcanic beauty. The trail is remote and almost entirely crowd-free.
Your destination is Moir Camp a hidden gem at the end of a colossal gorge, flanked by an ancient, imposing lava flow you will walk directly beneath. Stop at Fisher Camp for a hot lunch before the final approach to this secret campsite. This extraordinary location is an ideal acclimatization camp, with optional afternoon hikes into the surrounding Lent Hills for altitude preparation.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Habitat: Alpine Moorland / Plateau Hiking Time: 7β8 hours Distance: ~10 km / 6.2 miles
Ascend from Moir Camp into the stark Alpine Desert Zone here, extreme temperature ranges and thin air allow very little to survive. The dramatic Lava Tower rises 98 meters above the trail at 4,633 m a foreboding volcanic plug that serves as a critical acclimatization point.
Take lunch at the base of Lava Tower. Then begin the steep 2,000-foot descent into the Barranco Canyon, passing through a remarkable habitat of towering Giant Senecios and solitary Lobelias plants found almost nowhere else on Earth. Arrive at Barranco Camp at the foot of the famous Barranco Wall, buzzing with the energy of tomorrow’s climb.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Habitat: Alpine Desert Hiking Time: 6β7 hours Distance: ~9.9 km / 6.2 miles
The morning begins with Kilimanjaro’s most thrilling challenge β the Barranco Wall. Despite its intimidating appearance, this non-technical scramble is safe and deeply rewarding. Your guides support you every step of the way. The views from the top are extraordinary.
Descend sharply into the Karanga Valley, catch your breath in the thin air, and then make the final push up to Karanga Camp a vital overnight stop for acclimatization, set at the foot of Kibo Peak with sweeping views of the southern glacial valleys and ice fields.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Habitat: Alpine Desert Hiking Time: 4β5 hours Distance: ~5.8 km / 3.6 miles
Push steadily upward through rocky, wind-swept terrain toward Barafu High Camp aptly named “ice” in Swahili. The thin air demands more rest breaks, but spirits run high knowing the summit is close.
The otherworldly silhouette of Mawenzi Volcano rises dramatically to the east, bathed in warm African sunlight. Arrive at Barafu, eat a good lunch, and spend the afternoon resting. Your guide delivers the full summit briefing for tomorrow’s pre-dawn ascent to the crater rim.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Habitat: Alpine Desert Hiking Time: 5 hours Distance: ~4.2 km / 2.6 miles
β The Day You Will Never Forget
Rise before dawn and begin the summit ascent with headlamps cutting through the darkness. The steep, demanding climb through volcanic scree tests every climber’s resolve, but your crew’s encouragement never wavers.
Reach Stella Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim as the first light of dawn colors the sky. Push the final stretch to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), theΒ Roof of Africa, the highest point on the continent. The views are infinite. The moment is yours.
Then, rather than descending, make the rare choice to descend into the crater itself, a lunar, ash-grey wilderness of ancient glaciers, volcanic vents, and absolute silence. Set up camp at Crater Camp (5,790 m), theΒ highest campsite on Kilimanjaro, visited by fewer than 5% of all climbers. In the afternoon, hike to the spectacular Reusch Crater Ash Pit, a dramatic volcanic vent surrounded by the surreal, barren landscape of the crater floor.
Note: If you prefer not to camp in the crater, you may descend to Barafu Camp for the night and rejoin the group the following morning. Both options are supported.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Habitat: Arctic Summit Zone / Volcanic Crater Hiking Time: 6β7 hours (ascent) + 1 hour (to Crater Camp)
Wake at the highest campsite on Kilimanjaro, a morning unlike any other on Earth. Surrounded by glaciers, volcanic rock, and absolute quiet, take a final sunrise walk around the crater before beginning the long descent.
Pass through all of Kilimanjaro’s dramatic climate zonesβarctic summit, alpine desert, and moorland as you make your way down to Millennium Camp for a final night on the mountain. A well-earned dinner awaits, along with the deep, satisfying sleep of someone who has truly earned it.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Habitat: Arctic β Alpine Desert β Moorland Hiking Time: 5β6 hours Distance: ~10 km / 6.3 miles
The final descent through tropical rainforestβlush, green, and alive with birdsongβmarks the triumphant end of your journey. Sign out at Mweka Gate and receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate.
Say a heartfelt farewell to your mountain crew, then transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arushaβwhichever suits your onward travel. A hot shower, a cold drink, and a celebratory dinner await.
